Chandra observation of the Lobe of the SNR CTB 109
Abstract
We observed the unusually bright diffuse feature interior to the Galactic supernova remnant CTB 109 (G109.1--1.0) with Chandra ACIS-I. This feature, known as the 'Lobe', has previously been suggested as emission associated with the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 2259+586. We find that a more likely explanation is that the feature is enhanced emission from the interaction of the remnant with a nearby molecular cloud complex. The deep ACIS-I image (exposure of 80 ksec) reveals filamentary structures in the Lobe and a large number of point sources that were not resolved in previous observations. Spatially resolved spectral analysis of the diffuse emission indicates variations in foreground absorption, plasma temperature, and ionization timescale in and around the Lobe.
